Thanks Jimmy!! Our family's getting together wouldn't be possible without everyone pitching in. I'm grateful everyone is happy to be involved. Family really does matter. That includes any friends who are available to join the fray. The more the merrier.
This was a great article, Jim! It’s so often invisible to people that family connections don’t just magically happen - instead they are the result of hard work and perseverance. Bravo!
thanks so much! And yeah, I spend many years myself not really appreciating just how much work went into keeping the family together. It was only little by little that I started to appreciate how much goes into it!
My husband is the kinkeeper so it makes me laugh this would be a Mothers Day Post! As the eldest daughter and grandchild and mom of the first greatgrandchild... it's almost expected of me... and I'm really really bad at it. Like, this kind of work is NOT natural and it's harder for me than parenting a toddler or working a full time job. To other women out there who just suck at this stuff... you just might find a bighearted Italian husband to help you out in this area!!! Have faith 😊
for sure, there are definitely instances where its the guys not the women in families doing it. Interestingly, one of those links above goes to a pdf that mentions how as men and women become more equal in other parts of society (eg the workforce) women become less available for traditional kinkeeping work. I interpret that to mean that kinkeeping may become more equal along gender lines in the future.
fwiw, I am also bad at this. Like, I see what goes into and understand what ought to happen. But then I just like forget to make the calls or whatever.
I love this label: kinkeeping. It's such an important facet of strong communities, and I think the reason we don't see much of it anymore is we've forgotten how to make apprentices (everyone is too individual focused).

Indeed!
Loved this article... Never knew how to verbalize this gift that some people have and I am grateful for them!
Me too!
